Holiday Workshop & Open House

It's a South Shore Arts tradition for a reason. Gather the elves for a wintery afternoon of take-home crafts with holiday themes. You'll decorate clay ornaments, build your own snowman, and create a framed print to gift to family or friends.

 Plus, all Holiday Workshop registrants will be entered into our mystery gift drawing at our first-annual Holiday Open House. This festive afternoon in the Main Gallery features live classical performances, carolers, a holiday Maker's Market, and a book signing with WFMT's beloved pledge-drive artist David Lee Csicsko.

Chesterton Art Center Sip + Shop

 Ring in the holidays at CAC's annual Sip + Shop event on Thursday, December 12th from 5-8pm for the perfect opportunity to shop for friends and loved ones, and enjoy delicious small bites and a cash bar. Choose from a wide array of handmade artworks and goods crafted by local and Midwest artists.

Items available will include ceramics, jewelry, textiles, unique wood and glass ornaments, leather goods, handcrafted charcuterie boards and menorahs, prints, cards, and more.

ART + INNOVATION

Thursday, December 12, 2024 from 4:30pm to 6:30pm at Roots Market Cafe and Lower Lincoln in downtown Valparaiso

This is a quarterly artist reception for artists displayed at Roots Cafe and Lower Lincoln. Each quarter VGC is inviting our community to celebrate the works of three local artists, hear their personal stories/creative processes, and learn from innovative professionals. This mix and mingle is meant to bring innovative sharing to the forefront for all!

This offering is a direct result of artist roundtable discussions that identified a need for networking opportunities and consistent events for creatives. We are using grant monies awarded in 2023 from the lAG Creative Convergence Program to cater to this need. Creatives of all art forms and levels welcome!!!

Polar Express Night

Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Valparaiso

 The Regional Performing Arts is hosting their 5th annual fundraiser at the Barnes & Noble Valparaiso store featuring activities, a reading of "The Polar Express" and even a visit from Santa himself!

A percentage of the purchases made anywhere in the store will go towards the fundraiser.

This is a free event and fun for the whole family! Activities begin at 5 p.m. with Polar Express Story time at 7 p.m.

Hand Build with Love: Holiday and New Year's Eve.

Come celebrate the season with the workshop everyone is talking about. Spend some time with friends or family while you create a one-of-a-kind ceramic piece to cherish and learn a new skill together. After items are fired, our team will wrap the gifts for you for the holidays.

 Both workshops features small bites to eat, seasonal music, and a chance to write small notes of reflection for your special someone.

We are hosting a free Holiday Celebration event on November 30, which is the same day that the town is hosting their Hometown Holiday parade, so it will be a very festive Saturday for Chesterton and would love to get the word out!

After Sargent

South Shore Arts presents After Sargent, November 22, 2024–February 22, 2025 at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts.

This exhibit will explore how contemporary painters, draftspersons, and sculptors have carried on, challenged, furthered, and broken away from the tradition that John Singer Sargent unknowingly left with his approach to representation during the French period of Belle Epoque. Sargent’s methods and themes with oil painting not only struck a chord with the Edwardian elite at the turn of the century but have endured throughout the last century. Since his passing 100 years ago, artists have been inviting and creating new interpretations and perspectives to his wider legacy and methods, challenging what it means to paint, draw, or sculpt the human figure and beyond.

Featuring the work of several local and national artists who have either followed in the traditions that Sargent paved or have elected to deviate into new modalities of representational artwork. These works will offer viewers opportunity to reflect on how an artist’s legacy carries on and changes as they compare and contrast the effects their work has had amongst contemporary artists.

CHESTERTON ART CENTER TO BENEFIT FROM (219) TAPROOM GIVING THURSDAY TO RAISE FUNDS FOR

PUBLIC PROGRAMS

Chesterton’s beloved (219) Taproom is hosting a “Giving Thursday” on Thursday, December 5,

2024, from 4-8 PM to raise funds in support of Chesterton Art Center’s free public and outreach

programs. All tips from Thursday, December 5 will directly fund CAC’s programs that serve

Duneland youth and families.

“We’re grateful to 219 for offering this opportunity to raise awareness and support of CAC’s free

public programming and for all they do to support other community programs and initiatives

with their Giving Thursday series, “says Hannah Hammond-Hagman, CAC Executive Director,

“We look forward to celebrating with our CAC family and friends with a great evening out.”

Support from this Giving Thursday event will fund CAC’s Teen Arts Group, Youth Arts Outreach,

Paint Pour + Abstract Expression 

It's the class so popular we had to add a four-week extension! Take the journey into paint pouring. This is a continuation of our fall paint pour galore (no prerequisite required) and it extends the paint pour experience for learners. Meander through even more paint pour techniques and study the realm of abstract expression through the process, learning how to layer your works into more intentional abstract pieces. Although paint pouring will be the bulk of this offering, it will not be the entirety.
